Juan Araujo

Artist

Biography

Using the traditional medium of oil on wood, Araujo creates works associated with the history of painting, photography, publications, catalogues, magazines, postcards and posters.

Araujo pays tribute to the history of art while also considering what remains of the essence, texture, medium and argument of a work once it has been reproduced. For the 9th Sharjah Biennial he presented a series of oil painting appropriations of reproductions and photographs taken from architectural books that offered images of prominent buildings he had visited over the years.

Araujo has exhibited widely throughout South America and internationally including a solo presentation at Centro Gallego de Arte Contemporánea, Santiago de Compostela, Spain (2008). His work has also featured in numerous group exhibitions and biennials including the Aichi Triennial, Nagoya, Japan (2010), Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo, São Paulo (2009), the Mercosul Biennial, Porto Alegre, Brazil (2007), the São Paulo Biennial (2006), the San Diego Museum of Art (2005) and the American National Society, New York (2005). His work is found in public collections including the Tate, London, the Galería de Arte Nacional, Caracas, the Museu de Arte Contemporáneo de Caracas, Caracas and the Centro Gallego de Arte Contemporánea, Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

Juan Araujo was born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1971 where he continues to live and work.
