Biography

Amar Kanwar is an artist and filmmaker whose poetic documentaries and video installations examine nationalism, politics, violence and social performance in the Indian subcontinent. He participated in Documenta 11 (2002) and Documenta 12 Kassel (2007), where he premiered his acclaimed work The Lightning Testimonies. Recent exhibitions include Being Singular Plural: Moving Images from India, Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin (2010), Indian Highway, Serpentine Gallery, London (2008) and The Torn First Pages, Haus der Kunst, Munich (2008). He was the recipient of the first Edvard Munch Award for Contemporary Art from Norway. Kanwar lives and works in Delhi.
