Akram Zaatari


Biography

Akram Zaatari co-founded the Arab Image Foundation in the 1990s.  Zaatari’s work is deeply invested in researching photographic practices in the Middle East. His videos, publications and photographic installations look into technologies of image production and communication and the notions of surveillance, exploring the way different media apparatuses get employed in the service of power, resistance and memory. His videos include In this House (2005), This Day, (2003), Her + Him Van Leo (2001), All is Well on the Border (1997) and many more. His work has been shown at the Tate Modern, French Cinemathèque, the Oberhausen Short Film Festival, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, Haus der Kunst, Munich, the Sfeir-Semler Gallery Beirut/Hamburg, among others. He was part of the Venice Biennale (2007) and the Gawangju, Sydney and Sao Paolo biennials (2006). He lives and works in Beirut.
