Artist's Statement

My previous work ('Untitled' A and B series) has been concerned with barriers, land, longing and, ultimately, belonging.

They were extension of themes explored during the past few years. During the process leading to the images, it became increasingly clear to me how barriers, land, longing, and 'identity' inform, shape and define each other.

The D Series continues the exploration by examining the relationship between the subject and space, particularly the relationship between the solitary figure and the temporary boundaries that define a place. The series has allowed me to explore how the individual both affects and is affected by space.

The most recent work (D II Series) responds to several of the United Nations resolutions, specifically those that address issues of mapping and displacement. The series consists of 'location observations' over an extended period of time and mild interventions with the landscape. The images represent interactions between myself, the weathering process, and the changing landscapes that result from development. Choosing locations much in the same way a film director does, I move between abstraction and the specific circumstances found in particular places.
