Project Description

Camar Cande’s Journey chronicles a trek Abdullah Al Saadi took through the northern region of the United Arab Emirates and Oman. Accompanied by a donkey named Camar Cande and a dog, the trio walked through the mountainous terrain, documenting the landscape in photographs, video and watercolour paintings. When translated literally from Arabic, Camar Cande means ‘White Sugar’. The name also plays on the word Samarkand, evoking literary tales of travel and adventure. Fellow performers in this journey through time and landscape, the animals coloured Al Saadi’s visual impressions with a kind of spirituality generated by their unmediated relationship to the land and its elements.
