Provisions, Sharjah Biennial 9, Book 2

The second book in the Provisions series looks at all the experience of taking part in and attending a biennial – specifically Sharjah Biennial 9, which ran from March 19 to May 16 2009.

The Sharjah Art Foundation commissioned visiting writers, artists, and some staff members to write diaries during the opening week of the exhibition.  Their text contributions varied widely: musings on the days before the show opened, and the messy, sleepless process of making work to deadline; a discursive, emailed exchange-as-critique; a consideration of the connections between the distinctive smells of the emirate and childhood memory; and, for one writer in Ramallah, a biennial extracted from the corridors of the imagination and set against the checkpoints of his return journey from Sharjah.
