Biography

Onur Gökmen employs sculpture, photography, video, installation and performance in his work on history and historiography. He is interested in the discourses, narratives and objects that use the presumed authority of historical precedence to codify and structure the present through rewriting the past.

Recent works and performances include RAY 2018, MMK, Frankfurt am Main (2018); Urban Implosion, Asia Culture Center, Gwangju (2017); All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is never full, BAHAR, Sharjah Biennial 13 off-site project, Istanbul (2017); The Porcupine in the Room, Delfina Foundation, London (2015); Stay With Me, Depo, Istanbul (2015); Bureau Sement (with Özgür Atlagan), TORUN, Ankara (2014); Character, Öktem&Aykut, Istanbul (2014); PRODUCE 2 (with Fatma Belkıs), İstanbul (2014); Character (with Fatma Belkıs), Gallery Tankut Aykut, Beyoğlu, İstanbul (2014) and Bahane, Arter, İstanbul (2013).
Gökmen has received a commission from the Belluard Festival for the film Tales from the Dairy Diaspora (with Özgür Atlagan and Vera Ryser) (2016) and a second comission from the Spot Production Fund for his work PRODUCE 2 (2014). He was also awarded the Akbank/RHMD Contemporary Artists Prize, Istanbul (2011) and participated in a residency at Delfina Foundation, London (2015).

He is a Bard Milton-Avery MFA candidate in Sculpture, Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, US and a student at the Städelschule, Frankfurt am Main.

Born in 1985 in Ankara, Turkey, Gökmen currently lives and works in Frankfurt am Main and İstanbul.
