Biography

Jim Black is an influential drummer, he is also the leader of the band AlasNoAxis, featuring Chris Speed, Hilmar Jensson and Skúli Sverrisson. Based on the foundation of his virtuosic but highly personal approach to jazz drumming, his aesthetic has expanded to include Balkan rhythms, rock songcraft and laptopsoundscapes.

As a member of the collective group Pachora (with Speed, Sverrisso and guitarist Brad Shepik), he studied and adapted Balkan music into jazz. He has also helped to bridge the gap between electro-acoustic improvisational music and more jazz-based traditions.
