Biography

Julia Tieke is a researcher, curator and artist who works with ‘text, sound & around’.

Since 2007, Tieke has been Project Director of Wurfsendung, the ultra-short radio art programme of the German public national broadcaster Deutschlandfunk Kultur. She co-curated (with Elke Falat) digging deep, crossing far, an exhibition and research project presented at Lahore Art Council (2017); Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi (2016); Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien, Berlin (2016) and Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Bangalore (2015). She was also commissioned by Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, to conceive and produce a 12-channel audio installation focusing on migration issues (2016–2017). Works in other international exhibitions include Trading Urban Stories – An Audio Installation, Networked Storytelling Space and Radio Happening, Official Parallel Project of the Marrakech Biennale 5th Edition (with Berit Schuck) (2014) and Speaking of Beirut and the City is Missing (also with Berit Schuck), on the occasion of the Audiovisual Arts Festival Dream Machine 2, Beirut Art Center (2013). Additionally, she has written fiction and documentary programmes for German public radio (2007–present), and she published Mein Akku ist gleich leer, an account of a conversation she had with Faiz, a Syrian activist fleeing to Germany (mikrotext, 2015).

Tieke received a degree in Cultural Studies and Aesthetic Communication from the University of Hildesheim (2002). She has recently begun a bachelor’s degree course in History and Cultures of the Middle East at the Institute of Islamic Studies, Freie Universität, Berlin.

Born in 1974 in Thuine, Germany, she now lives and works in Berlin.
