Biography

Whether working with found footage or her own images, Shambhavi Kaul explores the cinematic construction of place, and inevitably, that of human identity. Her work conjures uncanny, science-fictive non-places.

Kaul’s work has been shown at the Toronto International Film Festival; Berlinale; New York Film Festival; London Film Festival; International Film Festival Rotterdam; Edinburgh International Film Festival; Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen, Germany; Ann Arbor Film Festival, US; and Experimenta Bangalore. Her work has also been exhibited at the Shanghai Biennale; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate Modern, London; and Jhaveri Contemporary, Mumbai.

Kaul is Associate Professor of the Practice in Art History & Visual Studies, Duke University, Durham, US. Born in 1973 in Jodhpur, India, she lives and works in Durham.

Sharjah Film Platform Talks and Workshops

In parallel with the screening of over 50 films, Sharjah Film Platform (SFP) presents a programme of talks on cinema and artists’ moving image—from panel discussions to in-conversation sessions—that address the creative and conceptual aspects of filmmaking and the latest debates in the film and television industry. Workshops on various topics related to cinema, from acting improvisation to film criticism, will also be offered.
