Biography

Informed by travel and nature as well as UAE culture and tradition, Salem Jawhar creates vividly coloured ceramic works that reflect his multi-faceted engagement with his surroundings.

Jawhar’s work has been shown in many exhibitions, such as 1980–Today: Exhibitions in the United Arab Emirates, UAE Pavilion, 56th Venice Biennale (2015); Silver Jubilee of the Emirates Fine Arts Society (2006); sixth Cairo Ceramics Biennial (2002); first GCC Ceramics Art Biennial, Kuwait (2001); Sharjah Biennials 2, 3 and 4 (1995, 1997, 1999); annual exhibition of the Emirates Fine Arts Society (1994); UAE Exhibition, Casablanca (1993); Ceramics Art and Arabian Calligraphy Exhibition, Sharjah Expo (1985); India Biennial (1984); annual exhibitions of the Emirates Fine Arts Society (1982, 1983, 1984); eighth Exhibition of Arab Artists, Kuwait (1982) and Emirates Fine Arts Society Exhibition, Africa Hall, Sharjah (1981).

He received first prize in the sculpture and ceramics category for the Al Owais Creativity Award, Dubai (2014) and third prize at the first Kuwait Ceramics Art Biennial (2001). Jawhar is a member of the Emirates Fine Arts Society.

Jawhar holds a Bachelor of Fine Art in Ceramics. He was born in 1956 in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE, where he continues to live and work.
