Biography

Encompassing video, film, collage and photography, Şirin Bahar Demirel’s work examines mis/displacement, home, memory and their relationship with places and objects. Through a female lens, she focuses on the dichotomy between public and domestic spaces by weaving political and personal narratives together. Using found images, both in collage and documentary works, she aims to create a conversation between the found and the constructed.

Her awards include Best Documentary Award, 56th Golden Orange Film Festival, Antalya, Turkey (2019); Best Documentary Award, 8th River Film Festival, Padua, Italy (20140; and PhoneDox Award, ZagrebDox International Documentary Film Festival, Zagreb (2014).

She has been an artist-in-residence at The Growlery, San Francisco (2018); Digital Artist Residency, UK, (2016); Eurasia Doc Documentary Scriptwriting Residency, Turkey (2016); and Gruntdvig Programme, Health Art Mobilizes Goslar, Germany (2012).

Demirel holds a BA in Radio-TV-Cinema from Galatasaray University, Istanbul (2010) and an MA in Artistic Direction of Cultural Projects from Université Paul Valéry, Montpellier, France (2011).

Born in 1985 in Istanbul, Demirel currently lives and works in the Netherlands.
