Prayer Room

Overview

In this work, Ammar Al Attar surveys prayer rooms across the United Arab Emirates. Mandated in public buildings by national legislation, these informal worship areas are ubiquitous, providing the faithful with a place for their five prayers a day, regardless of their location.

Nothing is altered or staged in these photographs, not even the lighting. The interiors are often humble, in line with Islamic tenets and in contrast to the exterior architectural opulence in the UAE. Serenity and stillness are prevalent in these makeshift spaces, elevating them from ordinary rooms in malls and business centers to egalitarian spiritual sanctuaries. Spread throughout the UAE, these very different rooms are filled with individuals all performing the same rites. The sense of order and togetherness offers a reprieve from the bustling chaos of urban development.
