Ten works from the series ‘Flag’, ‘War’ and ‘Love Letter’

Overview

Using the flag as a recurrent motif throughout her work, Sara Rahbar explores ideas of nationalism, ideology and belonging.
In works such as the series Flags, in which traditional fabrics are reworked to create textile collages of American and Iranian flags, Rahbar considers the ways in which a symbol of patriotism and independence can simultaneously represent ideological and nationalistic violence.

Referencing both the historical avant-garde and left-wing democratic movements as forms of resistance against the logic of contemporary capitalism, her work aims to challenge the binaries of 'self' and 'other', 'cannibal' and 'civilised'.
