Reading Circle: The Influence of Jean Genet and Walter Benjamin on Bouchra Khalili’s Work

With Abdelaziz Almulla

Ages 18+

In English

In this Reading Circle session, delve into links between works by Bouchra Khalili and texts by French novelist, playwright and activist Jean Genet and German philosopher Walter Benjamin. Genet’s ‘May Day Speech’ (1970) about race relations in the United States inspired Khalili’s Twenty-Two Hours (2018), and Benjamin’s essay ‘On the Concept of History’ (1940) influenced her Garden Conversation (2014).

This session is the first of two Reading Circles organised in parallel with the exhibition Bouchra Khalili: Between Circles and Constellations. Reading Circles engage participants in in-depth discussions about particular works and the social, political and philosophical contexts in which they were produced.

Conducted in English, the session is free. The texts by Genet and Benjamin will be emailed to you prior to the Reading Circle discussion.

The Foundation is committed to making its programmes inclusive and accessible. You will find disability access symbols indicating accessibility for all sessions on the registration form. Kindly contact us in advance to arrange for any support needed.
