Marigold Balquen (b. 1980, Quezon City, Philippines) moved to the UK as a domestic worker in 2013 and was forced to petition for basic rights under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act. Since 2015, she has been an active member of The Voice of Domestic Workers (VODW), supporting individuals escaping abusive employers and raising awareness of systemic challenges facing domestic workers. She is now a trustee for the organisation, as well as a frontline campaigner and the leader of its fundraising working group. In 2019, as a representative of VODW, Balquen helped lead one of the Serpentine Gallery’s Power Walks, a guided tour that revisited the histories of domestic workers in Hyde Park. In 2021, she contributed to the film and exhibition My Home is Not My Home at Manchester’s People's History Museum. In 2024, Balquen participated in Care Chain: Love Will Continue to Resonate, a workshop led by artist Moi Tran. Documentation of this programme is now on view at London’s Wellcome Collection, as part of the exhibition Hard Graft: Work, Health and Rights.
