Umar Rashid

Umar Rashid, also known as Frohawk Two Feathers, is a multidisciplinary artist and the dedicated historian and cosmographer of his own fictional universe, the Frenglish Empire (1648–1880). A product of some 17 years of practice, this realm’s plethora of rival states and factions have warred for centuries across the many artistic mediums that make up its fabric. Rashid takes aesthetic cues from both the historical and the contemporary to create reality-bending works. Employing symbolism from Egyptian hieroglyphs to Native American ledger art to Spanish colonial manuscript illustrations to Afrofuturism and 1980s and 1990s hip hop culture, Rashid’s remastered world narratives challenge mainstream historiographies and their pervasive imperialist legacies.
