Varunika Saraf draws upon archival and mythical imagery to reference complex histories of South Asia and their place in the political and social arrangements of contemporary India. She crafts this conceptual dialogue with the past through various techniques, including block printing, embroidery, dyeing and painting with natural and mineral pigments. The artist’s practice also articulates a feminist vantage point relating to the recent rise of right-wing populism and its resulting violence against marginalised groups. Saraf’s artistic mission thinks through imageries of violence pervasive in recent times and participates in the call for urgent action to unmake the future that has been set into motion by current events.
