Veronica Ryan is a sculptor whose handcrafted works evoke shapes, forms and objects associated with her Afro-Caribbean heritage. Concerned with notions of dislocation, alienation and belonging, her practice embeds the personal and the political in a vibrant visual language honed by a strong sense of place and a central and psychological sense of the extended self vis-a-vis the wider community. Ryan unearths traces of her personal history through her use of seed pods, fruits, plants, natural dyes, volcanic debris and other materials from her landscape of origin.
