Wangechi Mutu

Wangechi Mutu’s multidisciplinary practice, spanning installation, collage, sculpture and video, explores the value systems at the core of our representation patterns. Her work foregrounds the female figure and its various embodiments—whether fantastical, obscure or provocative. Mutu’s imagery challenges stereotypes of race and gender while conveying the potency of the individual desire for understanding and acknowledgement. Interweaving African traditions, historical references, layered symbolism, fashion, ecology and science fiction, she situates her hybridised interpretations of femininity at a crossroads between Afrofuturism and feminism.
