Wendy Red Star

Wendy Red Star’s intersectional, research-based practice explores Indigenous culture and belief systems as well as the pervasive historical and contemporary ramifications of American colonialism. Informed by her upbringing on the Crow Indian Reservation in Montana, Red Star plumbs the depths of photographic archives and museum collections in order to illuminate pivotal events in Native American history. By juxtaposing mass media depictions of Indigenous peoples with authentic cultural and gender identities, she creates works that are personal, playful, revelatory and unsettling in equal measure.
