Zohra Opoku traces the politics of personal identity from a critical perspective informed by historical, cultural and socioeconomic influences and grounded in the context of contemporary Ghana. Encompassing installation, performance, screen printing and photography, her multidisciplinary practice centres on textile cultures and dress codes as signifiers of personal and collective identity. Through the narrative lens of textile materiality and history, the artist explores the implications of the globalisation of fashion on self-perception and traditional modes of self-expression. Often incorporating family heirlooms into her work, Opoku interweaves her own self-image with her visual observations of Ghanaian cultural memory.
