Sharjah Art Foundation in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Art will present four films originally commissioned for Sharjah Biennial 10 at Manarat Al Saadiyat from the 7th to the 10th of November. For Sharjah Biennial 10, filmmakers were invited to create short films inspired by the Biennialʼs title Plot for a Biennial, and the key words that constituted its conceptual framework: treason, affiliation, corruption, necessity, devotion, disclosure, translation and insurrection. The resulting films presented a range of evocative and powerful responses to the curatorial vision underpinning the Biennial.
Since 2003, Sharjah Biennial has commissioned and produced numerous video works and films. Some of these, such as the ones featured in this series, were conceived in the format of conventional films, while others were designed as large-scale or multi-screen installations. Several of these works have become a part of international permanent collections, and many of the films from the recent Biennial have gone on to win awards at film festivals around the world.
Sharjah Art Foundation brings a broad range of contemporary art and cultural programmes to the communities of Sharjah, the UAE and the region. Since 2009 SAF has built on the history of cultural collaboration and exchange that began with the first Sharjah Biennial in 1993. Working with local and international partners, we create opportunities for artists and artistic production through our core initiatives that include the Sharjah Biennial, the annual March Meeting, residencies, production grants, commissions, exhibitions, research, publications and a growing collection. Our education and public programmes focus on building recognition of the central role art can play in the life of a community by promoting public learning and a participatory approach to art.
