Sharjah Art Foundation presents public programme for the reopening of Al Majarrah Park

Published on 15 May 2026

Sharjah Art Foundation announces the public programme for the reopening of Al Majarrah Park on 21 May 2026. The reimagined space, developed in collaboration with the artist collective SUPERFLEX, brings together art and community in the heritage district of Sharjah.

Responding to the site’s architecture, landscape and social environment, the reopening programme, taking place from 7:30 pm to 10:00 pm, offers engaging arts and crafts activities as well as a live musical performance.

Visitors of all ages can participate in ‘Stroll and Sketch’, a self-guided walking tour that encourages guests to observe and draw the plants, pathways and sculptural elements they see around them. In ‘Uncover Al Majarrah Park: Scavenger Hunt’, urban explorers ages 15 and above can follow clues related to architecture, sculpture and materials to discover distinctive structures, signage and traces of everyday life in and around the park.

Families with young children are invited to stop by ‘Art Adventure: Early Learning Station’, a dedicated space for three- to five-year-olds and their parents or caregivers. The hands-on activities are inspired by shapes, colours and textures found in the park.

The evening will conclude with a live performance by Inam and Friends, a traditional Pashtun music trio led by rabab player Muhammad Inam. With Bakht Wali on tabla and Saeed Ullah on harmonium, the ensemble brings together melodic storytelling and rhythmic improvisation in an immersive musical experience.

The reopening of Al Majarrah Park reflects Sharjah Art Foundation’s continued commitment to creating accessible public spaces for cultural exchange, learning and community engagement.  The park joins the growing list of permanent public art initiatives spearheaded by the Foundation, including Random International’s Rain Room (2012), opened in Al Majarrah in 2018; Gary Simmons’s Across the Chalk Line (2015), reopened in Al Mureijah Square in 2023; and Kerry James Marshall’s Untitled: Excavation (2022), located outside Al Hamriyah Studios.

Al Majarrah Park was conceived by renowned artist collective SUPERFLEX in close collaboration with Schul Landscape Architects, Copenhagen, and KWY.studio, Lisbon. The project has been made possible with the support of Sharjah Municipality and the Sharjah Department of Public Works.

Entry to Al Majarrah Park is free and open to all. No booking required.

About Sharjah Art Foundation

Sharjah Art Foundation is an advocate, catalyst and producer of contemporary art within the Emirate of Sharjah and the surrounding region, in dialogue with the international arts community. The Foundation advances an experimental and wide-ranging programmatic model that supports the production and presentation of contemporary art, preserves and celebrates the distinct culture of the region and encourages a shared understanding of the transformational role of art. The Foundation’s core initiatives include the long-running Sharjah Biennial, featuring contemporary artists from around the world; the annual March Meeting, a convening of international arts professionals and artists; grants and residencies for artists, curators and cultural producers; ambitious and experimental commissions and a range of travelling exhibitions and scholarly publications.

Established in 2009 to expand programmes beyond the Sharjah Biennial, which launched in 1993, the Foundation is a critical resource for artists and cultural organisations in the Gulf and a conduit for local, regional and international developments in contemporary art. The Foundation’s deep commitment to developing and sustaining the cultural life and heritage of Sharjah is reflected through year-round exhibitions, performances, screenings and educational programmes in the city of Sharjah and across the Emirate, often hosted in historic buildings that have been repurposed as cultural and community centres. A growing collection reflects the Foundation’s support of contemporary artists in the realisation of new work and its recognition of the contributions made by pioneering modern artists from the region and around the world.

Sharjah Art Foundation is a legally independent public body established by Emiri Decree and supported by government funding, grants from national and international nonprofits and cultural organisations, corporate sponsors and individual patrons. Hoor Al Qasimi serves as President and Director. All exhibitions are free and open to the public.
