In A Photogenetic Line (2019), artist collective CAMP present a sequence of cutouts drawn from the archives of The Hindu, a 140-year-old newspaper in Chennai. In south India, cutouts have long been used to spotlight individuals by removing the photo’s background. However, this technique is reimagined by CAMP. Instead of eliminating the surroundings, new boundaries or borders are created within the image. These borders, whether internal or external, guide the viewer from one image to the next. The sequence unfolds according to three basic principles: elements from the background move to the foreground, and vice versa; figures in the images age or grow younger; and two photo captions refer to one another. In this way, a continuous thread is woven, where each photograph connects to its successor. What is central in one image may become peripheral in another, and something marginal may rise to prominence. In this evolving proto-narrative, reminiscent of cinema, time is expressed not as a definitive cut but as an invitation, encouraging a dynamic flow across borders.
