Founded in 1993 by Jakob Fenger, Bjørnstjerne Christiansen and Rasmus Rosengren Nielsen, SUPERFLEX operates as an ‘expanded collective’, regularly collaborating with diverse people and organisations to explore alternative forms of social and economic organisation. Similar to The Bank (2013), created by SUPERFLEX for Sharjah Biennial 13, Al Majarrah Park (2018–2026) is an urban installation located near Sharjah Creek. The park encourages visitors to traverse time as they discover outlines of old courtyards and houses and stroll along uneven walkways reminiscent of desert dunes. Scattered across the park are seven large-scale concrete sculptures of ten everyday objects. Local residents were asked to identify objects of personal significance, items that reminded them of Sharjah and their homelands. The resulting sculptures depict everyday objects such as phones, toys and books. Beyond their physical forms, these shapes evoke memories, emotions and individual perspectives. Their meanings will continue to evolve as they engender new stories based on people’s experiences in the park.
