Visual artist and filmmaker Lamia Joreige uses archival documents and elements of fiction to reflect on the construction of historical narratives and the relationship between individual stories and collective memory. She has put particular emphasis on developing new ways to narrate the story of her hometown, Beirut. Beirut Autopsy of a City was inspired by the uncertainty that the Lebanese capital experienced between 2005 and 2010, a period that witnessed intense internal conflicts, political assassinations and war. The multimedia installation turns to history to survey moments when the city found itself under threat, whether from political turmoil or natural disasters, including fires, earthquakes and the great tsunami of 551 CE. The three non-linear chapters collapse chronologies, piecing together the overlapping histories and speculative futures of a city caught in an endless cycle of ruin and renewal.
