Huguette Caland’s abstract paintings and designs have been widely recognised for pushing boundaries in the formal representation of the body. They are imbued with what has been referred to as a form of ‘sensuous politics’. Bribes de Corps [Body Bits or Body Parts] (1979) is one of a series of erotic paintings that shift between figuration and abstraction, challenging conventions around the presentation of amorphous gendered beauty and desire. The explosive yellow hues within the paintings are suggestive of non-binary forms: multiple poles, stitched and sutured together.
