Susan Hefuna’s practice explores the architectural, cultural and social frameworks we rely on to orient ourselves as we shape our identities, relate to others and inhabit space. She uses a variety of media, including drawing, photography, sculpture, installation, film and performance to create multilayered works informed by her dual German Egyptian heritage. ‘Building’ (1991)—a series of 15 wooden sculptures, three of which are part of the Sharjah Art Foundation Collection—are akin to three-dimensional drawings created through the application of ink on wood. They are buildings imagined from a bird’s-eye view abstracted into diagrammatic forms. Through them, Hefuna visualises the architecture of perception—how we structure what we see and how those structures, in turn, shape the way we live.
