Although Saloua Raouda Choucair’s time in France, between 1948 and 1951, was only a brief moment, her experience there expanded a practice already engaged with abstraction’s capacity for transcendent lyricism. But while these experiences influenced Choucair’s abstraction, defined by a modular, organic geometry, it was the vernacular of Islamic art found in Arabic-speaking cities and their architectures that anchored Choucair’s reach for non-objectivity—a pure form of artmaking.
