Yayoi Kusama is known for her signature use of repetitive patterns, such as polka dots and infinity mirror rooms. Part of what is now an iconic series of installations, Dots Obsession (2013) is inspired by her belief that ‘our earth is only one polka dot among a million stars in the cosmos.’ Kusama employs repetition to evoke a sense of merging with the universe and articulates that her process functions as a means to cope with everyday difficulties and traumas of her past. Dots Obsession invites audiences to immerse in her world of dots, composed of oversized inflatable polka-dotted balloons that surround a domed infinity room. Upon entering, the effect of the mirror-lined space is illusory and the viewer is reflected endlessly alongside the dots, becoming an active participant, and ultimately a performer within the installation.
