Ahmed Morsi’s practice encompasses poetry, writing, editing, translation, theatre set design and journalism as well as painting. Over the years, Morsi has developed a community of lifelong friendships, and been a figurehead for the Alexandria School. Elegy of Al Gazzar (1968) was created before the artist left Egypt and moved to New York with his family in 1974. The funerary scene depicts gaunt, sketch like-figures of humanity set against barren landscapes, raising a tense evocation of the earliest humans.
