Falling Flowers
Born Samuel Henein to a family of metalworkers in Cairo who originally hailed from Asyut, Adam Henein completed his formative training in 1953, when he received a degree in sculpture. In 1971, the artist began painting abstract shapes on papyrus, an ancient Egyptian paper gleaned from the pithy stem of a water plant. These sheets of fibre are so fragile that ink and watercolour seep through their very essence. Their materiality is representative of the mythological tradition linking papyrus and hieroglyphics, an important cultural form native to Egypt.
