Basma Al Sharif’s practice navigates our complex internalisations of geopolitical shifts—both those unfolding in our own lifetimes and those inherited through generational memory. Rather than offering a singular point of focus, her installations create immersive environments whereinformation is not simply absorbed, but felt, experienced and embodied. Her film Farther than the Eye Can See (2012) traces a woman’s exodus from Palestine, beginning not with departure, but with arrival, and slowly unravelling in reverse chronological order. Al Sharif deploys the trope of the distant, detached narrator whose voice is interwoven with the woman’s intimate recount. Produced during her residency at Sharjah Art Foundation in 2011, the film moves fluidly across timelines and cityscapes, conjuring a palpable sense of dislocation. Through its layered narration and shifting geographies, it evokes the displacement and forced relocation of the Palestinians—seen both through memory and the lens of historical erasure.
