Huguette Caland’s precise and delicate lines portrayed flattened flesh, caressing lovers and interwound body parts. Her abstract paintings and designs pushed the boundaries of representing the body, sexuality, desire and the politics surrounding it. The 1970s saw an exuberant focus on the body in the artist’s work. In the same decade, she left Beirut to pursue her artistic career in Paris and lived an entirely diasporic life until 2013. In Flash (1978), a suggestive protuberance emerges from what appear to be mounds of pink flesh.
