Saloua Raouda Choucair is one of the pioneering figures of abstract modernism globally. Her work was inspired by a deconstruction and recodification of Islamic geometric forms, designs and architecture that she encountered in Egypt as well as the abstract and classical painting techniques she observed during her studies in Paris in the 1940s. Colour plays an essential role in her work. Teal, ochre, orange, fuchsia and black shapes seemingly vibrate on a horizontal plane in Gradual Rhythmical Composition (1953), painted after Choucair’s return to Beirut.
