‘The Contractor’s Heel’ (2016)—a group of sculptures commissioned for the 6th Marrakech Biennale—reflects Jumana Manna’s ongoing interest in archaeology and the ways in which heritage sites preserve, archive and interpret specific histories and artefacts. The forms and textures of ‘The Contractor’s Heel’, first staged in the remains of Marrakesh’s sixteenth-century El Badi Palace, are derived from contours and indentations in the clay surface of the palace walls. Individual pieces in the sculptural series reference body parts, adornments and urban features, with names such as Head—acquired by Sharjah Art Foundation—Shoulder, Amulet and Gutter.
