Since the age of 10, Yayoi Kusama has experimented with dots and the repetition of forms—covering photographs and drawings to ‘obliterate’ the image. Referred to as ‘Self-Obliteration’, Kusama would continue to develop this body of work that now extends from her early drawings and collages to include performance and film. Through frequent use of patterns and repetition, she intertwines existential motifs in a sanctuary of thought and practice that serve to ground, rather than daunt her. In Heart (2013), a red and blue aura resembles a sea of eyes, trapped in a square and surrounded by the artist’s iconic red dots. Meticulously arranged, while also boasting a gestural and aggressive sensibility, the painting is filled with suggestions of an unsettled life.
