As an artist and filmmaker, Akram Zaatari’s work uses the act of excavation as a means to uncover the often-febrile political circumstances which have rendered certain histories forgotten or buried. In This House (2004–2012) records the search for a letter written in the early 1990s by Ali Hashisho, a former resistance fighter, buried inside a mortar shell in the garden of a house in Saida, a city of in southern Lebanon. Zaatari, who also hails from Saida, contacted Hashisho—now a journalist—as a potential conduit for an artwork about hidden archives. To his surprise Hashisho became the central protagonist of this film.
