Man with watch and amulet

Lionel Wendt held his camera close to the faces and torsos of his graceful, long-limbed subjects—whether people, figurative sculptures or steadily composed objects. In his studio photography, bodies curve, catching the light in deep shadows that are further thrown into relief by Wendt’s choice of gelatin silver printing. His images are full of experiments in the darkroom: paper negatives, brom-etchings, relief prints, transparencies and photomontages. Wendt studied the figure, and each image became the watchful upshot of his intense analysis, with each arrangement of body and object draped in an alluring sheen.
