Bani Abidi explores the emotional and psychological realms of satire, absurdity and social commentary through video, Photography and performances. An eight-channel sound installation and 25 marble tombstones stand in memory of more than a million Indian soldiers who fought in World War I (1914–1918). Based on letters sent home by the soldiers and the folk songs sung by their wives, mothers and sisters, Memorial to Lost Words (2016–2018) invokes the complex world of yearning, fear and exile experienced by the young soldiers.
