My Mother and I

My Mother and I (1974) is an oil painting with a swirling, aquamarine backcloth; Berksoy’s mother—dressed in a powder rose blouse and a black skirt—reaches over her head in an impossible manoeuvre to clasp her daughter’s hand. Berksoy paints herself as an infant, dressed in flowing sleeves and a headband that sits like a halo over her hair. The artist continued to paint right into the final years of her life, with each work offering a trace of an intense and penetrating monologue.
