Bearing paintings of makeshift containers crafted from scrap materials, such as wires and metal cans, Lubaina Himid’s severed door is a nod to human ingenuity and resilience amid the stifling conditions of displacement. The intentionally ambiguous nature of the objects drawn on the door subverts notions of functionality while their cage-like appearance addresses the institutionalised erasure of the labouring bodies responsible for their creation and design.
