In the diptych Talwin Tamkin (2022), Khalifi plunges the viewer into the intimate consciousness of a male figure whose perceptions of the world are still being negotiated. On one panel, the eye voyeuristically enters the bedroom of the figure as they cast their gaze over abstracted renderings of Spanish artist Francisco Goya’s images of wartime violence. To his left is an empty landscape, its meaning still in flux. This incomplete scene from Khalifi’s village in Morocco would later be made animate in his painting Souvenirs (2023) in which he presents a narrative of restitution and return.
