The Last Shot
The Gulf War (1990–1991) instigated a marked shift in the art of Kuwaiti artist Thuraya Al-Baqsami. The drawings and paintings that she produced during this period responded to the collective trauma being experienced by the nation. The Last Shot (1991) is characteristic of this moment. Two bald figures stand back-to-back as if they are leaning on each other for support, with marks suggesting bullet wounds. Their darkened eyes amplify a state of terror that permeates throughout the image.
