In this never-before-seen painting, Anuar Khalifi presents a joyous male figure in a signature Lacoste tracksuit, a Goodyear tire nearby—symbols of a particular class status. The protagonist stretches out, akin to a ballerina about to take flight. Above him are luminous white arches, recalling those of a mosque or sacred maqam [shrine]. As ever, the artist uses his canvasses as sets for bridging historical and contemporary reference points.
