Theory of An Unfinished Building

Jumana Manna’s practice encompasses film, installation and sculpture. She investigates contradictory and alternating notions of preservation, destruction and regeneration within the fields of archaeology, agriculture and law. Theory of An Unfinished Building (landscape) (2021) imitates the ‘landscape’ of a construction site, where some aspects of the structure are exposed while others are covered by scaffolding. A piece of six-metre wide scaffold is transposed from the city of Beirut onto a wooden frame more than 2.5-metre high. It hangs against a weathered and exposed wall—small tears and gaps punctuate its surface, emoting a certain fragility.
