Nazareth-born artist Sharif Waked’s art intertwines contemporary politics with history, challenging conventional aesthetics and propaganda by humorously dissecting the absurdities inherent in conflicts. Featured in Sharjah Biennial 9 (2009), To Be Continued… (2009) mimics the format of videos created by suicide bombers, in which the assailants recite their final testaments before carrying out an attack. A man—played by Palestinian actor Saleh Bakri—sits before the camera with a rifle and a book. However, rather than delivering a political or ideological message, he reads an excerpt from One Thousand and One Nights, which follows the legendary storyteller Scheherazade narrates tales each night to a king in order to postpone her execution. By drawing this unexpected parallel, Waked explores the relationship between storytelling and survival, offering a powerful critique of how martyrdom and resistance are represented in the media. The work also serves as a poignant reminder that stories can be acts of life and defiance, not just political tools.
