Fateh Moudarres
Two Children Astride a Goat
1960
Oil on canvas
70 x 50 x 3.5 cm
Two Children Astride a Goat (1960) was painted just after the completion of Fateh Moudarres’s studies at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, where his fascination with surrealism surfaced to inflect his distinctive style. His work focused on portrayals of Syrian daily life and his community. In this painting, thick layers of oil paint in greens, reds, and yellows are used to depict two young people riding a goat across a rural environment out of the present into an imaginary realm. The children’s flesh is presented in textured tones, in stark contrast to the desolate greys in the canvas’ foreground.
