Lothar Baumgarten was a pioneer of conceptual art globally. Unsettled Objects, one of his most recognisable works, was acquired by the Foundation after extensive conversations with the artist and accessioned into the collection soon after his death. Presented on a slide carousel projector, the 81 images in Unsettled Objects (1968–1969) include photographs and text relating to artefacts from the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford. The vaulted objects before us seem to have the air and life drained from them, resembling lumpen bodies stuck in time. The verbs and adverbs written on the slides interrogate how methods of classification, categorisation and conservation continue to other non-western histories. The first in a series of artworks in which Baumgarten juxtaposed text and image, this installation is now widely considered a landmark piece in the artistic movement known as ‘institutional critique’ and in debates around postcoloniality.
